The Cost of Being a Bridesmaid

Brides have so much fun with the creation of ideas on how to ask their family and friends, "Will You Be My Bridesmaid"? But I'm suggestion you also go a step further and give the ladies an approximate budget. This kind gesture will alleviate you from hearing later on down the line..."I didn't know I had to pay for all this!" Although being selected to be apart of your friends big day is truly an honor, you don't want to ask your bridesmaids to tap into their 401k if you don't have to :)

...although I feel that being apart of the wedding party is gift enough!

Of course, not all of these costs will apply for each bridesmaid because every bride's request is different. But if for nothing else, you will still need to pay for your attire, alterations, shoes and accessories and possibly make-up.

Capture More Than Just Wedding Day

I have a bride who's soon-to-be mother-in-law is going to be unable to make it to see her son marry the woman of his dreams. And as a gift to her groom, she plans on hiring a videographer to capture the day so that his mother can see all the festivities. Her heartfelt story got me to thinking about how can couples personalize the videos more so than just capturing the ceremony and reception moments.

Save The Date trailer:

Instead of using a paper or magnet Save the Date, consider asking your videographer to create a 30 second trailer that could be e-mailed to your invited guests.

Proposal Story:

Ask your videographer to capture your proposal story on film. You both could share that special day individually or together, and top it off with a funny Q&A segment.

Well Wishes:

During the reception, allow your guests to say some happy (and funny) words to you on camera.

Clips of the celebratory events before and after the wedding day
(engagement party, rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, post-wedding day brunch):

Don't just stop with the ceremony and reception, ask the videographer to capture all of the wedding events leading up to and after your special day.

And if the videographer and photographer are not from the same company, make sure to introduce them. Having some of your engagement photos and wedding day photos intertwined within the video can truly be divine!

Beautiful Bride Countdown

As you move forward with planning your wedding, don't forget about your wedding day look. I'm not speaking of your gown and accessories, but about your hair and make-up for the big day. Even for the most beautiful bride, and you all will be on your BIG day, the regime should begin months in advance to avoid the horrified scream in the mirror when your eye shadow is blue and your hair looks like it did in the 80's :) Consider the timeline below when scheduling your beauty appointments:

8-12 months before the BIG Day
Consult a trainer or create a workout plan
Discuss skin concerns w/ doctor or dermatologist
Going for a new cut or color, this is the perfect time to try it out

5-7 months before the BIG day
Begin skincare regime
Play around with veils and headpieces

3-4 months before the BIG Day
Book your initial hair trial appointment
Book your make-up trial appointment
Begin maintenance on your hands and feet

1-2 months before the BIG Day
Have your hair appointment with your headpiece and jewelery
Get teeth cleaned and start whitening treatment
Select your wedding day nail color
Increase your workout regime
Finalize your make-up look

1-2 weeks before the BIG Day

Spell It Out On A Menu

I soooo love a menu card to add that additional punch when focusing on the details of a tablescape. Not only does it give your guests the menu at their fingertips, it can also add some additional color to your guest's place-setting. But what do you think of when you see a menu card? The standard is a piece of cardstock with the menu laid out in the following format: courses outlined by number - first, second, etc. or soup, salad, entree, dessert. But how about laying the menu out using one of these different designs.

Table Number Scavenger Hunt

Table numbers play a major role on your tablescape. They let the guests know which table they are seated :) And when plotting out your stationery designs for your big day, they are certainly an item that should be cohesive with the table design. And believe me, there are more whimsical ideas on how to incorporate the table number than just a plastic number in a silver stand...the standard fair you'll see at most banquet locations. That is what lead me on a table number scavenger hunt for the 2nd time to bring a host of ideas when designing your tablescape. Check out some of my favs below:

Use table number tents fashioned after your invitation design

Add some playfulness to the design w/ different size fonts or spelling the number out
I especially love the idea of the number on the cap of the chair

Frame the table number and back w/ patterned paper

Give the number meaning like this couple did...they met on the 5th day

Chalkboard picks make fabulous table numbers for and outdoor or rustic affair

Consider trips you and your fiancee' have taken and name the table after that location

How about the tables show photos of the both of you at that particular age,
or places you plan to visit, and for the DIY bride, make them yourself with colored coil

Let the table number double as a centerpiece
such as the design seen using this table number wrap

Or make them yourself w/ translucent paper, ribbon and a votive candle for illumination

Stamps Have Gone Up Again!

Effective on Sunday, January 22nd, postage rates have increased once again. Gotta love this economy :) See the details below as your move forward with your wedding stationery budgets.

Letters (1 oz.) are now 45 cents. These stamps will be needed for your basic Save The Date and reply card envelope.

Letters (2 oz.) are now 65 cents. These stamps will be needed to mail your standard size wedding invitation set, which include the invitation, reception card and reply card.
***Note: Square-shaped invitations and postcards will still cost extra.

Postcards are now 32 cents.

So if you have 44 cent stamps, you will need to apply a 1 cent stamp in order to receive it back in the mail. Still, I always suggested to take your wedding mailing inside the Post Office to have it properly weighed to ensure your guests will receive their envelope.

More Than Just Candy

I've talked about the candy buffet in numerous posts during my blogging career :) The first time being in July 2010. But I realized that I was doing my readers a disservice by not giving you more on the anatomy of a candy buffet and suggestions as to how to expand the display with other tasty treats.

You first need to think about the PRESENTATION for your guests. The best idea is to select a color scheme that blends with your overall color palette. Dress the candy buffet table with nice linens that blends well with the guest tablescapes and use vases in different sizes and shapes...some with lids and some without. But don't just limit yourself to vases, include platters and baskets to create height and drama. And make sure to spice up the containers with tags, ribbons and embellishments identifying the names of the candies or desserts.

Now when selecting the CANDY offer your guests variety. Having gummy, hard, soft, and chocolate candies ensure they will like at least one of the offerings on your candy buffet. But be mindful, if your reception or event is outdoors, don't select candy that will melt. That won't do anything for the look of your table :) And if you really want to make your buffet shine, don't limit yourself to candy. Add cookies, miniature cupcakes, macaroons, dessert shooters, marshmallows, cake pops, and/or fruit to your design. Or should you really want a creative way to display your wedding cake, have it become the centerpiece of the candy table.

Last but not least, don't forget the UTENSILS such as scoops and tongs for your guests to collect their candy and the bags or boxes for your guests to hold all their treats.

Accessorizing Your Boo!

On Day #28 of the 31 Days of December, we talked about the Boys and patterned socks to give their attire a bit more personality. Now let's dive a little deeper into accessorizing the boys with neckties, bow ties, pocket squares and belts. Any of the mentioned items would also make wonderful groomsmen gifts since I'm always questioned as to what to get the boys as a wedding attendant present :)

Go above and beyond the plain, non-descript tie for some prints and color


Loving a printed, whimsical bow-tie for the most fashion-forward bridal party

Even for the most casual wedding party, a bow tie can be so jazzy

Colored, patterned or textured pocket squares will complete a suit jacket

Consider a nice belt to keep those trousers up :)

Guest List Decisions

Today's post is simple...I'm going to focus on the dreaded wedding guest list and tackle some of the questions that every couple faces.

Almost immediately, you need to start discussing who you are going to invite to your wedding. And understand, this is a joint effort between the bride, groom and both sets of parents. I suggest creating three lists - (1) must be invited; (2) should be invited; and (3) would be nice to invite. Then decide do you want children to attend your wedding reception. Once the lists are compiled is when you can start making the final invitee list and begin working on your stationery items and pre-wedding functions. And to make your life easier in the long-run, create the list in a spreadsheet including their name, address, phone and email address.

Now how do I feel about inviting someone to the wedding ceremony, but not the reception...in my opinion don't. The worst thing that could happen is the "uninvited reception" guest shows up to the reception" guest during the ceremony and hurt feelings evolve. If you are limited in who you can invite to your wedding reception, just send those guest a wedding announcement after your nuptials to avoid unnecessary conflict.

There are also some rules of etiquette that must be considered. If you send someone a Save The Date, they should also be on the final guest list to receive the official wedding invitation. Also, if a guest is invited to your bridal shower or couple shower, it should be your intentions to invite them to your wedding day celebration as well. Otherwise, it looks like you "used" them for a gift.

Budgeting Beyond The Wedding Gown

I know the defining moment for a bride...when it really hits home that she's going from a Miss to a Mrs is when she says YES TO THE DRESS! It's a physical reaction unlike any other, at least that's what I've been told :) But please don't get caught up into thinking that the wedding gown + tax is it for your journey when making selections about what to wear and how to look on wedding day. There are plenty other components that must be added to the portion of your budget called...WEDDING ATTIRE.

For those of you reading the magazines and surfing the Internet, it's said that the 10-15% of the entire wedding budget should go towards wedding attire. Please understand, that this figure includes both you and your groom, although the biggest bulk of the monies does go towards the bride and her look of the day. Consider the WEDDING ATTIRE checklist below when making budget decisions:

Hanging Up The Gown

The bridal gown is the most photographed garment in the pre-ceremony/detail shots. You'll see photos all over the Internet of the wedding gown positioned over a bed, in a doorway, hanging in a closet, and from a chandelier. You'll see the bridal shoes and accessories in accompanying photos, but have you ever noticed the hanger from which the bridal gown hangs? I mean think about it, doesn't it show up in all of the shots. Don't allow it to be a non-noticeable...allow it to stand out!

Best of Dejanae Events 2011 Style!

I always like to reflect on the previous year, both good and bad, before setting future goals. 2011 was a year of change, growth, education and new friendships and I accepted all the challenges with open arms.

I started the year off receiving the proud honor from The Knot being named Best of 2011! Then moved into announcing myself as the author of a bridal planner called WEDology Notebook: For The Budget Chic Bride. From there a magazine named N'Digo contacted me and wrote a full-page spread about the Notebook, Dejanae Events and our future goals. After speaking with up-and-coming planners in this industry, I developed and launched WEDology Experience, a full-day training seminar based on the Notebook and it's usefulness for planners and hosted 2 awesome training sessions. From there, I reached out to the fab Stacie Francombe on Facebook, the former creator and editor of Get Married Magazine, and a whirlwind educational event was heldd in Chicago, called Inspire Smart Success Experience, and Dejanae Events was the event planners! We also had 2 weddings featured in Today's Chicago Woman and the partnership with Flossmoor Country Club grow as I assisted in planning their Open House.

But the best part of 2011 was graduating eight excited students from the Wedding & Event Planning 10-week certification course I have instructed at Elgin Community College for 5 years! Whew, but I'm not done sharing because my biggest challenge and happiest accomplishment comes from blogging 31 Days in December to my fabulous readers! Love you all!!!

Typically when thinking of a wedding or event, ribbon enters into the scenario to decorate programs or used as an embellishment to favor boxes/bags. We All Like a Good Beverage! (Day#29)

When you think of beverages for a wedding reception or event, I'm almost positive that the bar comes to mind. Stocked with premium liquor, beer, wine, soda and juice, this is usually the first stop guests make once they arrive to the venue. But consider for a moment, a twist on the bar and create a beverage station for your guests to enjoy before the marriage ceremony, during cocktails or later into the night. The station could include almost anything from fruit infused water to your favorite specialty/signature drink. Add some nice linen, classy drinking glasses and watch your guests enjoying themselves as they relieve their thirst :)

The options are limitless when personalizing your event to showcase your style...and taste in beverages!

For The Boys (Day#28)

I know the WEDology Blog is pretty much geared towards women planning a wedding or event. But today I wanted to focus on an idea of jazzing the men up on wedding day. When considering the options for the groom and groomsmen, there isn't a whole bunch you can do with a rented tuxedo outside of a distinctive boutonniere, vest, bow tie and/or tie. But let me retract that statement and say...there is one more fun thing the groom can do to stand out on his wedding day.

Socks play an important roll for the groom and his men on wedding day. In order to wear those shiny shoes, or whichever style is selected, it's imperative that men wear socks! Now consider spicing them up with prints, words or a distinctive color for this once in a lifetime day!

Trifles a.k.a. Dessert Shooters! (Day#27)

As I track my reader stats on Blogger, I see that one of the most popular blogs in WEDology by Dejanae Events history is the post about Shooters. So here is a little insight on this tasty treat you eat with a spoon.

Trifles and shooters are desserts LAYERED in a glass bowl or you can use a shot glass when creating miniature versions. The layers typically consist of a cake at the bottom. Then a layer of jam, fruit or combination of both. And the final layer is a custard topped with whipped cream. This delightful dessert has made it's debut on plenty of dessert stations, buffets and tables and guess what...I don't see it disappearing any time soon. YUM!!!

Intermezzo? What is That? (Day#26)

When hosting a 5-course meal for your wedding guests, there's soup, salad, intermezzo, entree and dessert. As you probably already know, I'm a dessert lover, but the intermezzo runs a close second :)

So what is an intermezzo? In music, an intermezzo is a composition that fits between other larger acts or musical work. When using the term regarding food, this is the portion of the meal scheduled to clean the palette before the yummy entree arrives. Ideally presented in the form of sorbets or a light wine, it's a refreshing change to the 1st and 2nd courses...and I love the intermezzo presentation!

You Can Do All That With Paper? (Day#24)

I'm a complete 100% Pinterest junkie! Get me the room with padded walls because I need to be committed from social media overload. But regardless of my love for those pin boards, I'm always astonished by the "pins" of paper items and the uniqueness they bring to a wedding day. Now if you are a tad bit confused by my statement, go along with me on my quest of all things paper...minus the standards of invitations, programs and escort cards. I honestly had no clue that paper could do all this! Oh and I'm in love with the photo above of the napkin rings and simple paper centerpiece!

Playing...Name That Drink! (Day#23)

I love when my couples select a signature drink for their reception bar. There are times when they put the concoction together or ask for a little assistance from me or the bartender. Either way is fine because you can find tons or recipes online (I'll save that for a later blog) to match your wedding colors and theme. But what are you going to name this fabulous creation you'll be serving guests? I've listed some quirky, but fun name ideas below:

Blushing Bride - would make a GREAT name for a pink drink

First Kiss - sexy name for a red-colored drink

Honeymoon Awaiting - for a fun loving orange or yellow-colored drink,
especially nice if the couple is going somewhere warm for their honeymoon

Apple of My Eye - would be an awesome name for an apple-flavored martini

Love is in the Air - for a blue-colored drink reminiscent of the sky

Sealed with a Kiss - would be a yummy name for a drink flavored with chocolate-liqueur

Wedding Bells - would work nicely if the drink you create is shaking, not stirred

Hot Romance - would be a flirty name for a drink with a little kick to it

...or blend your first names together and/or last name to create your own signature cocktail name!

And after crafting a cute bar menu noting the drink's name and ingredients, don't forget to accent the glass! Rim the glass with colored sugar or caramel, and add a cutesy stirrer or straw for that finishing touch.

Napkin Grandeur (Day#22)

I've talked about napkins before in past posts about certain folds and adding embellishments so they'd pop on dinner plates. But today's post will focus on some of my favorite folds...folds that are timeless and elegant for any style reception. Now it's funny, my passion for napkins, but they play a major roll on the tablescape. This simple square-shaped piece of material can add grandeur to any place setting. Take a look:

Now I love a GREAT candy bar or dessert table, but have you ever given thought to a Popcorn Buffet??? One of my July 2011 brides loved the idea and purchased all varieties of Garrett's Popcorn for this fun interactive favor display for her wedding guests...accompanied by personalized popcorn boxes she ordered from an Etsy store. Guests went wild once the Popcorn Bar was revealed and hovered around it most of the night! Now that's a favor worth it's weight in gold...or should I say popcorn :)

I know when I attend industry parties, the caterers are always trying to WOW us with the most unique canapes they can create. Combinations I would never imagine joining hand-in-hand are being passed around on trays for us to try and hopefully enjoy. But the same concepts might not work for your wedding guests with a variety of taste palettes. So consider the overall experience of your guests, rather there are appetizers for the cocktail hour or late night snacks for the party-goers, make them unique, fun and appealing. Add your personality to the mini delights that are served!

I just had the pleasure of being the event planner for the Flossmoor Country Club's Open House (Flossmoor, Illinois) this past November. And one of the things I feel guest enjoyed the most was the entertainment we provided. Now we had the right music to set the mood of the event, but the Cigar Roller was certainly unexpected!

When considering entertainment for your reception guests...think out-of-the-box and the type of crowd you have. Below are a few non-traditional ideas for some reception fun:

Now I love a great signature drink. In fact, I personally believe every couple should have a drink named after them at the reception. Martinis are my favorite probably because of the glassware used for those sexy drinks! But I've recently come across a trend that can even make a mason jar look hottttt! STRAWS!!! Now I'm not speaking of the plastic variety we can get inside the cup and of a McDonald's Sweet Tea, but the paper straws that come in a wide array of colors and add whimsy to any drink.

Now that's truly adding a statement to your signature drink!

Shoes Have Personality, Too (Day#17)

I love those small touches that an excited bride makes to her attire to show off her personality! From the gown, to the veil, to the accessories, to her hair and make-up, everything for her "perfect" day must be flawless. Now being the shoe woman that I am, there is one tiny detail that I'm seeing regularly from these fashionistas - shoe language. I've coined the term simply because brides are adding sayings and phrases to the soles of their wedding shoes. From hand written words with a Sharpie marker to decals purchased from a store or online...I'm simply loving this personal statement! Check out some of the shoe language below:

A Nice, Cold Refreshing Drink (Day#16)

When I stumbled upon this idea, I smiled from head-to-toe thinking about the guests when you place this refreshing drink idea in front of them. Not only could you see ice glistening in a drink glass during the cocktail hour, but they would certainly add a punch of color to the water glasses on the reception tables. Or better yet, save the ice cubes for your speciality and signature drinks. Either way, it's always those smaller details that get noticed and discussed by the guests...so now you can add ice cubes to that list!

***side note - when adding flowers to your ice cubes, make sure they are edible flowers and that they have not been treated with chemicals or pesticides.

What To Do With This Program? (Day#15)

I have met several couples over my career that do not have ushers or hostesses to pass out wedding programs prior to the start of the ceremony. They are always left with that dreaded question, what to do with those wedding programs? Now understand, having a program ISN'T a "must have", but when they are not available, you'll find some guests questioning or walking around looking for one. So how might you resolve this problem without laying the wedding programs on a non-descript table. Check out the photos below:

Either one per seat or one every-other seat.

Hold My Cards, Please (Day#14)

So the question of today is - what do I do with all these wedding cards once I've removed the checks and cash??? Your spouse will probably say, "Toss them", but you are thinking, "But I want to keep some of them." Either this scenario is playing out in reality as you read this post or this conversation will surely happen once you return from the honeymoon. Well check out this cool and easy idea that will allow you to keep those pretty little wedding cards.

All you need are 2-3 binder rings, a hole punch and ribbon to tie the "booklet" shut. And there you have it...a keepsake that will take up very little space, but allow you to thumb through your wedding cards year, after year, after year!

Aww Sugar! Honey Honey! (Day #13)

Coffee and tea service typically happens once the wedding cake is served unless requested in advance during dinner. Rather it be presented in a carafe on the guest tables or a coffee, tea and cake station is set-up inside of the reception space, guests tend to gravitate towards this beverage regardless of the season. As an avid coffee lover, when I spotted this cute idea, I just had to share!

What about jazzing up that ceramic or glass coffee/tea mug with some sugar that does not come from the white, pink or blue packets. These pretty shaped sugar "cubes" would add the finishing touch to your warm beverage.

I have a lot of couples that do not want children to attend their wedding reception. I know you've seen the infamous line "Adult Reception" on a RSVP card. Get Your Dance On! (Day#7)

One of my April weddings had this wonderful idea to provide flip-flops for the ladies when the dancing portion of the reception began. Those Tall Slender Candles (Day#6)

Many of today's centerpieces include pillar candles, votive candles, tea light candles and floating candles, but what about the loner...taper candle? I know with city ordinances about open flames, the taper has become more obscure, but consider the simple idea below. It would work really well for the bride who does not want a lot of flowers at her reception but a pop of color.

Items Needed:
1 vase
6-8 taper (or roman) candles - white, ivory or colored
colored ribbon
candle wax to use as adhesive

How To:
Bunch the taper candles together and tie with a ribbon tightly.
Add candle wax to the bottom of all taper candles.
Place in vase and light.

To Have and To Hold Your Bouquet (Day#3)

Most of the wedding ceremony you will be holding your beautiful bouquet, but what happens to it once all the photos are done and the reception begins? I mean it is a costly piece and you don't want to have it laying around all night. Assign it a task as well.

Have a vase at your sweetheart or head table with just a little water at the bottom to cover the stems. Place your bouquet in the vase and watch it double as a beautiful table centerpiece. You could also consider placing your wedding bouquet on the cake table or dessert table should you already have a head table arrangement. And should you really want to make a dramatic statement, have vases for your bridesmaids scattered on the head table for their bouquets.

Renting That "WOW Factor" For Wedding Day

When creating your budget, one of the main ticket items should be the overall look you are going for on wedding day. Several brides have told me, "I don't like flowers." OK and that's fine, but there are many other items to consider when designing the "WOW Factor" for your ceremony and reception. Check out the simplified list below and decide what is important to you.

Lush linens to grace the guest reception tables. This is a wonderful way to create the "WOW Factor" with using color and textures to make the space pop.
Comfortable seating provided for guests. I recently wrote a blog on the different styles of chairs that can be rented for both the ceremony and reception. Some come in different woods, while you can add a punch of color based on the cushion selected. But don't forget the rental of lounge furniture that can be placed throughout the space to really add that "WOW Factor."
Lighting to enhance a space. You can really create the "WOW Factor" by using up lights, a gobo with your monogram, twinkle lights or specialty lighting to make the reception venue sparkle.
The dance floor is where your guests will be the longest. Consider renting one if the space doesn't provided one or you don't like it. Can you imagine being twirled around by your groom on a seamless white dance floor? Now that's officially "WOW Factor"!
How about renting some party extras like a photo booth, concession machines, a cigar roller...you name it. Your guests will certainly feel the "WOW Factor" when you go a little over the top with the activities they can enjoy during your wedding reception.

Guests could write "Well Wishes" on a tag and hang from a decorative tree. Then later collect the tags and put into a scrapbook.

Instead of having a "blank" wine bottles on guest tables, add a tag that ties into your decor.

A Thoughtful Reception Buffet

Having a buffet for your wedding reception is not a sign of being "cheap". Please realize that a buffet isn't really that less expensive than a plated dinner. The chef has to prepare the same amount of food for all the guests because they do not know what they are going to plate when coming to the buffet. The major decrease in cost comes from you needing fewer staff than when serving a plated meal.

I have listed below some factors you should consider when host a buffet meal for your wedding reception:

Make sure their are servers to place the food on your guests plate. This allows for equal portions to be distributed, plus it's more sanitary.
Always have a double-side buffet. This will alleviate the lines.
Ask the staff to excuse the guests for the buffet. Don't have the DJ announce over the microphone.
Pay for silver chafing dishes to hold the food. For a wedding, pay the extra and eliminate the aluminum pans. This will create a well rounded look for your dinner.
Have the flatware at the guests seat instead of having them struggle to hold their plate and silverware.
When selecting your centerpieces, don't forget to have the florist design a buffet piece or two.
Have your sweetheart or head table served by staff as well as the parent tables.Nothing is more unappealing than seeing a bride in her white gown walk though a buffet line.

I'll say it again...the wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception. It's the first item excited wedding attendees flock once they are allowed into the reception space. The linens for the cake table are always sorted out with such detail, but what about the "stand" the cake will be sitting upon? Most cake decorators will place the cake on a silver or gold board, but if you want a little extra WOW factor for your delicious confection, consider some of the ideas below:

I think a lot of banquet venues purchase ugly chairs just so the client will rent a chair cover and sash, which could easily start $4.50 per chair (I'll touch on that in another blog). But for those with a more flexible budget, consider renting chairs with a corresponding cushion for your guest tables. Although a bit more expensive, they can add an more elegant touch to the space. Take a look at some of the "statement-making" chairs below:

And consider these cost-saving ideas should you want to rent chairs:

Bagging The Cake

With dessert stations becoming more and more popular, the wedding cake is likely to be cut and displayed alongside other delicious treats. But, should you want guests to take home a slice of cake or a cupcake, provide some packaging for this to happen. And for the couples who aren't that fond of giving out guest favors, ask the caterer to package the wedding cake and display on platters for guests to take as they depart the reception. It makes a great favor, late night snack and you are almost guaranteed no leftovers.

And remember to add a personalized touch by adding your names, monogram or decorative enhancements to the packaging.

Branching Out With Your Wedding Decor

As we say bye-bye to the summer of 2011, the amount of weddings we are coordinating still has not diminished. In fact, October is the 3rd most popular wedding month in the Midwest and having an outdoor ceremony is planned by many...but don't forget Plan B because the weather could change any minute.

Well for the bride who wants to bring the fall season into her wedding decor, I've always thought the mixture of branches, flowers and candles can truly create some statement pieces for your ceremony and tablescapes.

Using branches to bring the outdoors inside for the wedding ceremony.
This easy DIY project joins branches together with ribbon and adds a few blooms at the knot.

Put branches in a tall wide vase and add flowers around the rim to create a dramatically tall centerpiece.

Make an escort card table tree by using branches, flowers and hanging crystals.
Attaching the flower buds to the branches really softens to centerpieces.

Place branches in cylinder vases to add height to the space and surround them with
small bouquets creating a high and low effect.

Toast It Up With Champagne

At some point during the wedding reception, toasts are going to happen. The greatest piece of advice I could offer is keep them short, sweet and do not open the floor up for all your guests to start extending their well-wishes. And this happens to be the perfect opportunity for the bride and groom to say a few words of thanks to family and friends for celebrating the day with them. But before the guests of honor take the mic, the Best Man and Maid/Matron of Honor should be the ones to welcome the guests and say a few sentimental words of remembrance, encouragement and love to the newlyweds.

I have witnessed on numerous occasions a Best Man or Maid of Honor unprepared to speak to the crowd and an awkward pause always occurs when they say "I thought I was going to have a little more time" or "I didn't write anything down" or "I'm unsure what to say". Have a skillfully planned wedding toast, in my opinion, is the only way to go when planning out your reception timeline. So below I've given a few suggestions on how to make this memorable moment happen as stress-free as possible:

First, before you take the mic, always have your glass of champagne or wine in hand before speaking. It is a toast, remember. And end the toast with, "Please raise your glass..."
The Best Man should lead the toasts with the Maid/Matron of Honor following.
Have a toast prepared in advance. You have known for months that you were going to be asked to give a toast when you accepted the position.
Speak from the heart and know that it's okay if your toast is written on paper or a note card so you don't forget.
Remember, it's not a speech and please keep it tactful. Speaking about negative past events and ex's is a total no-no.
Last, keep the toast less than 2 minutes. Toasts are typically going to happen after the bridal party has been announced in or before the entree, so keep it short and sweet so that guests can eat!

What's Holding Your Flowers?

Most centerpieces are going to consist of some type of glassware holding your flowers and/or candles. When I speak of glassware, I'm talking about cylinder vases, Eiffel Tower and bullet vases, or cubed shape vases...the standards you'll see at a wedding reception. But when creating your entire tablescape, consider the vessel that will be dominantly displayed on your guests table and how you might like it presented. Check out the ideas below for the "flower holders".

Consider using vintage vases or mason jars for single blooms or small floral clusters and group them tightly on your guest tables.

Using colored glass or uniquely shaped glassware can really make colored florals pop and become a conversation piece on your guest tables.

And for the DIY bride, wrap your glassware in patterned paper or fabric to blend nicely with your overall color scheme.

Cupcake Fashions

Today ends cupcake week and instead of posting another beautifully decorated cake-in-a-cup, I've decided to blog about the holders that contain this tasty treat.

Instead of using your standard white paper cupcake liners that can be purchased at any local grocery store, consider using decorated cupcake wrappers as the holder of your treats. You of course can purchase them, but consider making wrappers yourself out of printed cardstock, doilies and/or foil in your wedding colors to blend with your decor. Then display them on a lovely platter, cupcake tower or stand. As I always mention, guest love it when you pay attention to those small details.

Dressing The Tables

Today's blog was inspired by the design I'm doing for one of our July couples who selected chocolate, ivory and coral as their wedding colors. As I thumbed my way through table linen swatches, it dawned on me that some couples might not know the diminisions of linens needed for particular tables.

Below are some linen basics:

6' banquet table - seats 4-6 people - 90x132 banquet size to the floor on all sides

8' banquet table - seats 4-6 people - 90x156 banquet size to the floor on all sides

60" round - seats 8-10 people - 120" round will go to the floor

72" round - seats 10-12 people - 132" round will go to the floor

Lo-boy or Caberet
36" round - seats 2-4 people - 96" round will go to the floor
48" square - seats 4 people - 120" to 132" round will go to the floor and you will have to tuck edges

Hi-boy
36" round - seats 2-4 people - 132" round to create hour-glass shape tied with a chair sash

Hey...It's Good To See You!

Is the "receiving line" a dinosaur??? My personal opinion is YES! It's rare to see the newly married couple, their bridal party and parents in front of the church quickly greeting guests as they make their way through the line. Not saying you shouldn't have one, but understand the receiveing line does take a long time and can cut into your photography time and reception time if not planned properly. So what are some alternatives to replace the receiving line:

Actually schedule ample time for photographs between the ceremony and reception, approximately 2-3 hours. This will then allow you to be apart of your cocktail hour and greet guests at the reception venue.
Instead of placing favors on the tables, the bride and groom can walk around and personally give a favor to the guest. This would allow for them to stop and speak with all those that attended.
Have the DJ make an announcement that the couple will walk around to each table and greet guests individually.
Plan with the photographer to walk around to each individual table and take photos with you and your guests.

But should you lend towards a receiving line, include only yourselves and your parents. Most guests aren't attending the wedding to meet the bridal party ;)

I visited the venue of one of my July 2012 brides yesterday and the space was "ceiling inspiring". The ceiling beams of this venue had my designing wheels turning! Plenty of locations will not allow you to touch the ceiling when planning the decor outline for your wedding ceremony and reception, but when allowed, take full advantage of looking at the space three-dimensionally - floor, walls and ceiling. Consider some of these ideas if your venues ceiling are screaming for some enhancements :)

Adding some fabric panels or draping to the ceiling softens the space and creates a more intimate feel.

Rope lighting or string lights can liven up any ceiling of a reception venue.

Balloons in your wedding colors are always playful and dance around the ceiling with ease.

Patterned lights on the ceiling can create a wide range of emotions and can interchange throughout the evening.

Consider adding unconventional elements like paper lanterns or umbrellas to enhance the ceiling decor and create a conversational piece for your guests.

Cocktail Details

I'm not saying spend an enormous amount of money on this one hour, but don't forget about the small touches that lend to the fabulous-ness of your reception that will begin the following hour.

Some simple inexpensive ideas for consideration:

Finish the hiboys with linen and a sash to compliment your overall color scheme.

Use fruit, herbs or whimsical finishes to garnish your signature drink.

Add a drink stirrer to your beverages.

Complete the drink with a personalized cocktail napkin.

Add a fresh flower to the serving trays of your appetizers.

Although I have been finding a lot of couples making donations to their favorite charities in lew of guest favors, you still have the couples that love that tradition. My biggest suggest is keep it simple and edible! It's amazing how many keys chains and wine bottle stoppers I pick up at the end of the reception and give back to the couple along with their other packed items. But an edible guest favor...WOW...all you see are empty wrappers on the tables. Consider some of these unique suggestions:

Making Sure Guests Are Comfortable

Plenty though goes into the design elements of planning a wedding, but what about the comfort of your guests as they spend at minimum an 8-hour day of celebrating with you and your soon-to-husband. Consider some of the ideas below, especially if the ceremony and/or reception is outside.

How about a water station set-up before or after the ceremony especially if it's a hot day.

Consider giving guests suntan lotion if the days activities are going to be outdoors...and they can double as wedding favors.

Use Parasols when the ceremony is outside to shade away the bride sun.

How about placing fans on the ceremony chairs and depending on the design, they can double as wedding programs.

Place a basket of Flip Flops near the DJ for the ladies who want to dance the night away, but their heels might prevent it from happening.

Blending Families

I was involved with a wedding yesterday and was so inspired by the involvement of the couples children. Many couples are merging families and the adjustment for the child can sometimes be difficult. With all the wedding planning, they can feel left out and it's very important to make them feel included during the planning process and on wedding day.

I've listed some suggestions below that just might help alleviate the "sad face":

Allow the child to be involved in a few of the planning meetings and give their opinion.

Give the children perimeters, but allow them to select their attire for wedding day.

During the unity candle lighting or sand ceremony, have the child join you both at the altar and make them apart of this important ceremony.

Ask the children to come the altar before the pronouncement of husband and wife, and ask the minister to pronounce you as "Husband, Wife and Family".

During the ceremony, present the children with a loving token like a necklace or bracelet to show them they play an important role in the new family.

Include the children in the engagement photo session and display not only couple photos during the reception, but photos showcasing the "new" family.

Have a kids table with goody bags and treats during the reception.

Lounging Around the Space

I love the addition of lounge furniture to the reception space. Typically done around the dance floor, in a corner sectioned off in the venue, or a separate room, this look can give the most traditional reception ballroom a splash of contemporary flair. But as you know, it could certainly be an expensive addition to your already tapped budget. Consider the following ideas to get that look you've dreamt about.

Speak with the venue about using their "waiting" furniture, especially if you are the only event in the space. See if they will allow you to move the furniture into the ballroom or rearrange it's placement in the foyer. And don't forget to tip the "movers" because this would be an additional job for the reception location.

Create your color palette with the furniture on location by adding some pillows in your color scheme to the chairs and couches. Or add a throw for a big punch of color to the unsightly furniture (or stain) to make it blend with your idea.

Should you not be able to rent furniture, consider renting tables and ottoman's. They are not as heavy and would be less expensive the move. Then you could blend them or place them within the furniture that is already at the reception venue.

Also, check out your local stores like Target and Walmart around "Back-to-School" season. College dorm furniture and tables have that simple look that could be easily decorated with some fabric touches and pillows. But the best benefit, it's on sale ;)

Last, ask the venue if they have any older furniture on location that they'd be willing to bring out of storage...or course for a fee :)

Decorating your reception tablescapes, you should consider every part of the experience...from the plates they are eating on to the napkins in which they wipe their hands. I realize that most couples spend their reception budgets on the centerpieces leaving little money for decorative china, flatware and stemware. But should a little something be left in the budget, consider jazzing up the tables with colored drinking glasses for that additional punch of color.

Holding The Bouquet

Brides spend plenty of time making sure the flowers that make up their wedding bouquet are just as perfect as their dream gown. But you want to make sure that you select the most flattering "holder" for your hand-tied wedding bouquet.

After alterations, you may have some material left over. Give that to your florist and allow them to make a wrap for your bouquet. Stones, similar to your gown, could be added as embellishments.

For the bride with an old Hollywood or vintage style, consider using a mussy tussy as a bouquet holder. This unique holder comes with a holder for the bouquet to sit in once the couple is seated at the reception.

For the bride who wants the stems exposed, consider a unique ribbon and brooch to add flair to your bouquet or dual colors tied in a unique design.

I love wedding invitations and what they represent...a couple inviting family and friends to witness and celebrate their first day as husband and wife. But let's not forget that envelope in which the invitation is being mailed. Outside of hand calligraphy or digital calligraphy to address the envelopes, what can you use to jazz up your invitation "packaging"?

Consider an envelope liner in the color(s) of your invitation suite. They can be order from your stationery designer or even created by you as a DIY project.

If you have to use a label to address your invitations, how about a whimsical wrap that shows the guests name and address on the front and wraps around to the back with your return address.
How about a label to close the envelope and a matching postage stamp on the front. I love the coordination!

Or the elegance of a custom created wax seal to close your wedding invitation envelope.

Garter and Bouquet Toss Alternatives

Over the last few years, I've come across couples that do not want the garter toss or the bouquet toss as apart of their reception timeline. No problem in my eyesight because sometimes the shenanigans that go on with those relays could be left for a less traditional atmosphere :) So if you have no single ladies or men in the crowd, what could you do to fill in that space. Check out my suggestions below:

Married Couples Dance
I simply LOVE when this is added to the reception entertainment! This is the moment when all the married couples come on the dance floor and the count down begins to see who's been married the longest. Of course the newlyweds are the 1st to leave the dance floor since they have been married the least amount of time. But it's so wonderful to see the longevity and inspiration of marriage when the DJ asks who's been married 40 years or less and there's still several couples on the dance floor. The winning couple takes a picture with the guests of honor and sometimes are presented with a token of love from the new Mr. and Mrs.

Newlywed Game
This is when the newly married couple is put on the spot...literally right in the middle of the dance floor and asked a series of questions to see if they both agree with the answers. Standing back to back, the couple raises their hands to denote the answers to the questions and hopefully they both answer correctly. The guests really cheer when they don't :)

Honoring the Matriarch and Patriarch
This is such a beautiful gesture from the newlyweds. They ask the Matriarch of their families to the dance floor and present them with a small bouquet of flowers and the Patriarch is presented with a gift card. The honor and appreciate goes a long way and I can almost guarantee tears for joy not only from the couple, but from family members as well.

Ice Cream Love

It Was Truly A Cocktail Hour!

Most couples will have a cocktail hour prior to dinner service for their wedding. This is the time when your guests get to mingle and socialize after your wedding ceremony. Appetizers are plentiful and the bar is open. Guests may be enjoying the entertainment provided, a slide show you may have prepared or grabbing their escort card...but don't forget a true cocktail that gives a hint of your personality.

I've sat through tons of tastings and the bar always seems to be the detail that's left unfinished. Either you select the standard, top-shelf or premium and the conversation moves on. But how about setting up a station or creating a signature drink that will "WOW" your guests.

The signature drink.

A fresh fruit juice or lemonade stand. Alcohol or non-alcohol.

A twist on the Jello shot.

Your favorite soda served with a straw. I love some Coke!

Hidden Fees and Costs

Today I want to talk a little about budget and some of the "hidden" wedding costs you are overlooked when creating your wedding budget.

Make sure deliver fees are included in the quote and that you are aware of them before signing the contract. Consider paying for delivery of rental items; catering and alcohol; wedding cake; and florals and decor.

Depending on the time of year you are getting married the coat check may need to be open and attended.

Ask the reception venue about cake cutting fees for cakes brought into their establishment or if there is a fee for wrapping up cake for guests to take home versus serving it as dessert.

Some hotels will charge for the delivery of welcome bags regardless if they are distributed at the front desk when guests check-in or if they are delivered to their room.

When budgeting for wedding invitations...don't forget the cost of postage to mail them. Typically it's $.61 stamp to mail the entire ensemble and $.44 stamp for the reply card envelope. But it's always best to have a completely assembled wedding invitation weighed before purchasing.

What's In Her Bridal Bag

Sometime during wedding day, I'm possession of the bride's clutch or purse. This dainty bag holds the personals of the bride for her very special day...but she must select carefully as these "purses" are typically small and held easily in the hand. Below I've made some suggestions on what to include:

A bride MUST have her favorite lipstick or lip gloss on hand to keep her lips lush. I'm a lover of Victoria's Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss. The shines lasts for hours and so does the yummy flavor.

Keep a few blotting sheets like these you can purchase at Sephora to remove the shine from your face and give you that matte complexion for photographs.

A bride should carry a trial or travel size of the perfume they are wearing on wedding day. With all the hugs, her wonderful fragrance is bound to wear off.

Along with your lip gloss, put a mirrored make-up compact in your clutch to re-touch your make-up after all the hugs and kisses.

And to wipe away those tears of joy and affection, a handkerchief looks much better than a ball of tissue.

Yummy Fourth of July Dessert!

I'm sneaking this blog post in today because tomorrow I honestly plan on relaxing :) I know many of my readers are going to celebrate the holiday with family & friends, and food and drinks will play a major role. I found this awesome summer dessert on Bakers Royale that would make any strawberry-loving ADULT smile with glee. Enjoy!

Fourth of July Crème Filled Strawberries ~ Get patriotic with these adult easy red, white and blue dessert for your 4th of July barbeque or picnic. These vodka infused whip cream strawberries are the perfect way to enjoy a cocktail dessert!

4th of July Creme Filled Strawberries
No recipe just a few notes for this fast and easy dessert. A few notes:

Hull your strawberries and cut the bottom tips for a flat edge.

Add two tablespoons of vodka to every cup of whip cream.

Fill hulled strawberries with whip cream. I cheated and actually used Reddi Whip.

Toss the blueberries in an apricot sauce.

Top crème filled strawberries with blueberries.

Of course for an alcohol free version omit the vodka.

And I believe this dessert would be wonderful served or on display at a bridal shower or rehearsal dinner!

This post will not be for the budget-chic bride today, but for those men and woman who truly want to enter the arena of wedding planning. Outside of a solid wedding planning and event business for over 11 years, I pride myself on being an educator for the last 4 of those years here in the Chicagoland area.
